Grenache doesn’t seem to get the praise and attention Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir receive, but it certainly should! One of the most widely planted grapes in the world, wine critic and writer Jancis Robinson calls it “an unlikely hero of a grape”.  Grenache is, in fact, an integral part of the world of wine, found in blends of France’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and cult-like status wines of Spain’s Priorat region. California’s Sine Qua Non is commanding top dollar (as in upwards of $500) for their hard to get Rattrapante Eleven Confessions Estate Grenache. In our state the grape played a part in the history of Washington wine. A Grenache Rosé was one of the first wines produced under the new Chateau Ste. Michelle label in the 1960’s. The wine received national critical acclaim, but was eventually pushed out by the popularity of California’s white Zinfandel. Winemaker Bob Betz believes it helped Washington State begin the move towards planting more European wine grapes in the 60’s and 70’s. It is now on the rise in our state, both as the backbone of some of our state’s stellar Rhône-style wines, and in the sometimes hard to find single vineyard, 100% Grenache bottlings of wineries such as Cayuse. It is certainly time to take a look at Grenache!

When we asked North City Bistro’s Ray Bloom to teach us about Grenache it was immediately clear he was an excellent choice. He responded with “I love Grenache, and that would be very fun!!”. After a career working at wine importer Vinum, Ray is now focusing on the Bistro, which includes a wine shop and live music venue, featuring local, national and international jazz and blues artists. We are very happy to be returning to North City Bistro for an always great dinner and an evening of Grenache!
